Garland Hughes

Garland received his MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004. Prior to attending Chapel Hill, he obtained a BS in psychology from the College of Charleston and joined Aon Specialty Risk Service's management training program with the mergers and acquisitions group. In 1995, Garland returned to the Carolinas to pursue his interests in commercial real estate with Lat Purser & Associates as an institutional leasing associate. Garland joined Crosland, Inc.'s retail division in 1996. During his eight-year tenure with Crosland, Garland was the director of leasing and anchor leasing. He was responsible for managing anchor leasing, leading a team of leasing associates and pursuing new development opportunities. Garland's experience is concentrated in the retail sector with leasing and development portfolios ranging from build-to-suit transactions, neighborhood shopping centers, regional shopping centers and mixed-use developments. Garland's transaction list includes retailers such as Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Lowes Foods, CVS/pharmacy, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Best Buy, Circuit City, Dick's Sporting Goods, Linens-n-Things, Ross Dress for Less, Old Navy, Pier 1 Imports, World Market, PetSmart, Office Max, Talbots, Victoria's Secret and Ann Taylor, along with developments such as StoneCrest at Piper Glen, Birkdale Village, The Shops at Greenridge and Poyner Place.

Garland is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the executive committee. During the past 5 years, Garland has participated in ULI's Technical Advisory Panel. He has chaired and founded a young leaders group and is now Chairman of Urban Plan.

Garland is a member of the Charlotte Regional Commercial Board of Realtors (CRCBR), the Charlotte Chamber, International Council of Shopping Centers, and holds real estate licenses in both North and South Carolina. Garland is a graduate of the Charlotte Leadership School and is a sponsor for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training.
